The materials of the rolling elements, inner and outer rings must have high hardness, contact fatigue strength, good wear resistance and impact toughness. Usually made of chromium alloy steels, common grades: GCr15, GCr15SiMn, GCr6, GCr9. After heat treatment, the hardness reaches HRC61–65. Cages are typically stamped from low carbon steel sheet; For high-speed bearings, cages made of non-ferrous metals (for example, brass) or plastic are more often used.
The seals prevent lubricant leakage and contaminants from entering the SKF tapered roller bearing, keeping the bearing lubricated and clean for longer service life. When selecting a seal, consideration must be given to design complexity, cost, efficiency and seal life based on the operating conditions and required life of the SKF bearing. The correct choice of seal gives a significant effect; if used incorrectly, the result will be unsatisfactory. For example, contact seals heat up at high speeds and quickly wear out, losing their tightness; Wear products contaminate the SKF bearing. For non-contact seals, dust and oil holding capacity is reduced when there is a pressure difference (air or oil) on both sides of the seal.
